Las palabras son la herramienta más habitual que utilizamos para comunicarnos con los demás, pero el lenguaje verbal es un medio de comunicación relativamente imperfecto, ya que cada uno de nosotros puede percibir una misma palabra de distinta forma. Cuando nos comunicamos verbalmente con otros, nuestro tono de voz, el timbre y el volumen, transmiten también mensajes a los demás: seguridad, espontaneidad, seriedad, franqueza, etc. Sin olvidarnos de la comunicación no verbal (los signos corporales, expresión facial, gestos, ...), una forma de enviar y recibir mensajes sin utilizar palabras, que representa la forma de comunicación que mayor indice de información transmite.
